Ten of the greatest Roman floor mosaics discovered in the last few centuries are explored.
And many of these ancient mosaics are so detailed
and colourful they look like fine paintings - reflecting the great skill and patience of the Roman artists
who made them so long ago.
I explore each mosaic's history, place of origin, and the theme or story being conveyed, including
close-ups of fine detail. Additionally, using diagrams and some "then-and-now" transitions, I provide some unique
perspectives.
The Roman Empire was so vast it covered much of Europe, North Africa, and west Asia.
And whenever Roman ruins are discovered in those areas, stunning floor mosaics have been found
in the ruins of wealthy homes, Roman baths, and other public buildings.
For example, in Tunisia and Algeria, there are museums bursting with Roman mosaics,
some very large and decorated with elegant images of people, animals, and patterns. Come and see why
these ancient Roman mosaics still have the power to amaze people.

So many Roman mosaics survived over 15 centuries to fascinate us, and educate us about Roman culture and lifestyle.
But how did the Romans create them, and why? What materials did they use? And how did they produce thousands of
tiny mosaic pieces - made of stone, glass, and ceramics - used to make just one mosaic?
Furthermore, what methods did Roman artists use when assembling their mosaics? What size were the pieces, and how densely were
they arranged?
Using many photo examples and clear discussion, I explain the five mosaic techniques used by Roman artists
- some of which are still used today.
I also explain a crucial aspect of Roman mosaics - how were they supported underneath?
How many layers of mortar and other
materials were required to construct solid and waterproof foundations that have withstood so many centuries?
